By introducing a single human glucose-transporter gene, the marine alga Phaeodactylum tricornutum lives off sugar and grow in the dark. In human, this gene encodes a protein that imports glucose through the membranes of red blood cells. This demonstrates that a fundamental change in the metabolism of an organism can be accomplished through the introduction of a single gene.
